              Transcription Notes

It is my goal to achieve the most accurate possible transcription of recorded interviews. Common mispronunciations of common words are not indicated (e.g., just/jist); but unique or interesting ones are. Regional speech is accurately yet selectively portrayed, to give a sense of the speaker's rhythms without torturing readers with excess apostrophes and misspellings. The following guide explains symbols in the text which mark my occasional ineptitude.--CU
P.S. Your suggestions and corrections are welcome!

Symbol: question mark in parentheses =  (?)

                   INDICATES UNCERTAIN TRANSCRIPTION:
                        (a) of name or place (verification/correction is welcomed)

                        (b) of phrase or word (represents best guess)

Symbol: series of dots* =   ...

INDICATES A MISSING WORD OR PHRASE:
                        (a) pronunciation is indecipherable
                        (b) speech obliterated by other sound
                        (c) interruption of interview by outsider
                        (d) interruption of recording device

*Note: A series of dashes (---) indicates a pause by the speaker and is used for punctuation only. It does not signify missing material.

V  =  transcribed from video recording
